Francis Cronje is the MD at Ф franciscronje.com, an advisory firm that provide POPI and other related services to various corporate entities, irrelevant of size or regulatory shape, where he serves as an Information Governance Specialist with a strong legal background.
He was instrumental during the drafting and refinement of the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPI) and acted in an advisory capacity to Parliament’s Technical Working Committee on POPI. He later provided further insight to the Portfolio Committee of Justice and Constitutional Development during the finalisation of POPI and also served on the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) assisting with POPI.
He obtained a LLM degree from the University of Oslo’s Norwegian research Centre for Computers and Law where he developed a strong knowledge of European Data Protection law.
He is the co-author and co-editor of Cyberlaw@SA second edition and also co-authored the book, 101 Questions and Answers about the Protection of Personal Information Act, which was recently published by JUTA.
Francis is a Certified Information Privacy Professional through the International Association of Privacy Professionals where he holds CIPP and CIPP/IT certifications and is serving as their KnowledgeNet chairperson in Cape Town.
He has written various articles on ICT Law and privacy and regularly presents at seminars and conferences.
Francis also serves as an adjudicator and appeal panellist at the Wireless Application Services Providers’ (WASPA) and Internet Services Providers’ Associations (ISPA).
He was recently shortlisted as a candidate for the Information Regulator.
